There's something mildly remarkable happening this awards season. Two of the competing films going head to head in the best picture, international film and actress categories are foreign-language movies set in Latin America.

Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascon apologised on Friday for past social media posts denigrating Muslims and other groups and said she would go silent to help her movie "Emilia Perez" ahead of the Academy Awards,

"With 13 Oscar nominations and at least three probable wins, Jacques Audiard's 'Emilia Pérez' hardly needs additional praise at this point," said Tim Robey in The Telegraph. "That's lucky, since most people would rather be caught dead than bestow any."

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the embattled best actress Oscar nominee will no longer be flying to L.A. for any of the film's awards activities this week.
