The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will survey northern Michigan for a potential wolf presence. Here's a look at what to know.

The last formal survey conducted in the Northern Lower Peninsula was in 2019. The idea to hold the survey was not triggered by any specific sightings or uptick in reports.

The hunter believed the animal was a large coyote, but genetic testing by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources later revealed the animal was a wolf. Few details have been released about the mistaken illegal culling of the wolf.

Before someone shot and killed a wolf in Southwest Michigan last year, officials had no reason to believe any had established in the Lower Peninsula. The DNR is now looking for proof.
