Saturday marked the official halfway point to sturgeon spearing season on the Lake Winnebago System, and after an evening and full morning of snow, the slow season continued. Officials with the Wisconsin DNR stated that only 24 lake sturgeon were harvest from Lake Winnebago on February 15,

Despite weather and poor water clarity, spearers are still finding success in the Lake Winnebago system. Almost 30 sturgeon have exceeded 100 pounds.

The Payne’s Point Bar & Grill registration station in Neenah processed the most sturgeon of the day for Lake Winnebago with 25 fish, followed by the Downtown Oshkosh station with 21. The Poygan station led the way for the Upriver Lakes with 53 sturgeon registered.

Harvest continues to be slow on the Lake Winnebago System as sturgeon spearing season closes in on its first week, although several 100-pounders were caught on Thursday. The Wisconsin DNR stated in a release that a total of 20 lake sturgeon were harvested on February 13,

It’ll be good ice and no fishy business this year.

Luck struck many spearers on Lake Winnebago, including Hayley Herzig who on Saturday speared the fourth-largest fish ever on the Winnebago system with an F4 female that weighed 180.5 pounds and measured 79.3 inches long.
