Here’s your Black history fact of the day. February 11, 1976 the first African American secretary of the United States Army was confirmed. Clifford Alexander Jr. was from Harlem, New York. He is best known in his role with helping to transition the Army to an all volunteer force and encouraging recruitment after the Vietnam War.

Beginning Feb. 1, schools, museums and communities across the nation will mark the start of Black History Month — a celebration of Black history, culture and education. The history of the month dates back almost a century, and the way it is celebrated and evolved has created history in itself.

Muhammad operates the Torchlight Academy Black History tours year-round, especially during black history month and Juneteenth. He says the words etched in stone is a sign that delineates segregation, Jim Crow, and the boundaries of race that are part of the city's history.
