Mission San Fernando Rey de España was founded on Sept. 8, 1797, by Franciscan Friar Fermin Lasuen. The 17th of the California Missions, Mission San Fernando closed the gap between Missions San Buenaventura on the coast and San Gabriel in the interior.

Mission San Fernando was the 17th Mission to be founded. The site was dedicated by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen on September 8, 1797. The site that Father Lasuen chose was in a valley whose English name means Saint Catherine of Bologna’s Valley of the Live Oaks.

On September 8, 1797, the fourth Mission founded by Father Lasuén in less than three months was named San Fernando Rey de España. Although the Mission was supposed to relieve the long march between San Gabriel and San Buenaventura, the aged Padre set it somewhat to the south because of the barren terrain and poor drainage of the middle area.

It was the 17th mission founded of the 21 Spanish Caliornia Missions, and it has a lot more to see than many of its counterparts. Father Lasuén founded Mission San Fernando Rey de España on September 8, 1797. The Padres sought a location for a new mission to relieve the long journey between Mission San Gabriel and Mission San Buenaventura. Juan Francisco Reyes, the Alcalde (Mayor) of the Los Angeles Pueblo, had already claimed the most desirable location.
