Visiting Helena downtown today, it was nice to see a few shops, museums and a restaurant that have opened. Sadly, I remember the area in the 70s and weekend “loops” on Cherry Street. But new beginnings are seen and hopefully more are to come.

The Cherry Street Historic District is a historic neighborhood, commercial, and entertainment district serving as the downtown of Helena in Helena–West Helena, Arkansas. Cherry Street is located between Elm Street and the nearby Phillips County Courthouse to the north, and Porter Street to the south.

Helena is the eastern portion of Helena–West Helena, Arkansas, a city in Phillips County, Arkansas, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1833 by Nicholas Rightor and is named after the daughter of Sylvanus Phillips, an early settler of Phillips County and the namesake of Phillips County.

The 2010 census counted a population of just over 12,000 citizens. The origins of the two prior towns can be traced to separate eras in American history.

Downtown Helena is just across the Mississippi River about 11 mi (18 km) east of the junction of Highway 61 and Highway 49, which is approximately 58 mi (93 km) south of Memphis, Tennessee.
