In this report, we first briefly review the history of the study of life cycle and its evolution in land plants (embryophytes). This will be followed by a discussion of adaptive advantages of haploidy and diploidy and envi-ronmental conditions that favor each life cycle strategy.
The Land Plant Life Cycle - Digital Atlas of Ancient Life
2020年6月13日 · The land plant life cycle is known as a sporic (for sporic meiosis), dibiontic, or haplodiplontic life cycle. This type of life cycle exhibits alternation of generations. In other words, to complete a full circuit of its life cycle, a land plant must produce two different types of multicellular organisms.
Plant Life Cycle: Stages and Diagram - Science Facts
2021年2月4日 · A basic plant life cycle goes through five stages: 1) seed, 2) seed germination, 3) seedling, 4) adult plant, and 5) pollination and fertilization. They are discussed below in detail. The life cycle of a flowering plant begins with a seed. It has a protective outer covering called the shell.
The evolution of the land plant life cycle - Niklas - 2010 - New ...
2009年10月23日 · We review the developmental, paleobotanical and molecular evidence indicating that: the embryophytes descended from a charophyte-like ancestor; this common ancestor had a life cycle with only a haploid multicellular generation; and the most ancient (c. 410 Myr old) land plants (e.g. Cooksonia, Rhynia and Zosterophyllum) had a dimorphic life ...
How land plant life cycles first evolved | Science - AAAS
2017年12月22日 · Land plants inherited their biochemistry and cell biology from ancestral green algae, but their fundamental organs and tissues evolved on land. Their closest algal relatives have a haplontic life cycle, which typically features a simple multicellular haploid sexual phase (a gametophyte) and a unicellular diploid zygote .
Evolution of the life cycle in land plants - QIU - 2012 - Journal of ...
The study of evolution of the land plant life cycle requires a multidisciplinary approach that considers morphology, development, genetics, phylogeny, ecology, and evolution in an integrated fashion, and will deepen our understanding of plant evolution.
The evolutionary emergence of land plants - ScienceDirect
2021年10月11日 · The independent evolution of multicellularity in the haploid gametophyte stage of the life cycle and the diploid sporophyte stage of the life cycle of land plants offers opportunities to determine the genetic basis of convergent evolution.
Origin and early evolution of land plants - PubMed Central (PMC)
In contrast, in all land plants, life cycle is constituted by an alternation of generations, the diploid sporophyte and the haploid gametophyte. The sporophyte does not form gametes but haploid spores by meiosis. These spores divide by mitosis and develop into gametophytes, which directly produce gametes.
Land plants appear to have arisen from a single colonization of the land surface around 450 million years ago. In the early phases of this colonization, plant innovations centered on the elaboration of a new kind of plant body capable of withstanding the rigors of life on land and exploiting the new opportunities that terrestrial existence ...
2.5.1: Introduction to Early Land Plants - Biology LibreTexts
Describe the basic life cycle shared by plants. Land plants are sometimes referred to as “embryophytes” due to the evolution of the embryo, a zygote that is retained and nourished by the female gametophyte as it grows. Embryophytes share many common features, most corresponding to the selective pressures from the initial movement onto land.
