Cuauhtémoc lies 103 km (64 mi) west of the state capital of Chihuahua. As of 2010, the city of Cuauhtémoc had a population of 154,639 up from 98,725 as of 2005.

Ciudad Cuauhtémoc originated near Cusihuiriachi, grew significantly with the arrival of the railroad and the settlement of Mennonite communities, and has since become the region's epicenter of economic development. Today, it is renowned as the melting pot of three distinct cultures: Rarámuri, mestizo, and Mennonite.
