He and his wife, Lydia (Dianne Wiest), after 12 hours of "labor," finally manage to construct the baby. He is named Rodney (Ewan McGregor), and he becomes a young inventor who dreams of making the world a better place for everyone. Rodney idolizes Bigweld (Mel Brooks), a master inventor and owner of Bigweld Industries.

In a world populated by sentient robots, Rodney Copperbottom, son of Herb and Lydia Copperbottom, is an aspiring young inventor from Rivet Town. He idolizes Bigweld, a famous inventor and philanthropist whose company, Bigweld Industries, employs other inventors and provides robots with spare parts.

G-Rated Sex: When Rodney's Parents 'Make a baby', they're doing so in the most literal use of the phrase. Robots are born from their parents assembling them from a complete set of parts that comes delivered in the mail, confirmed in how Rodney was born.

Rodney is first seen as an infant being put together by Herb and Lydia. As he grows up in Rivet Town, Rodney develops an interest in inventing and to be like his idol Bigweld. Rodney later invents a small robot called Wonderbot to help Herb with his job of dishwashing at a restaurant.
