Organized and curated by The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this exhibition features over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera, and artifacts.

Basquiat was the last major painter in an idiom that had begun decades earlier in Europe with the imitation of African art by modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse. Inspired by his own heritage, Basquiat both contributed to and transcended the African-influenced modernist idiom.

At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in Documenta in Kassel, Germany. At 22, he became one of the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his artwork in 1992.

One Basquiat is the latest link between the artist and Brooklyn, from his birth at Brooklyn Hospital, to childhood visits to the Brooklyn Museum, where his mother enrolled him as a Junior Member when he was 6 years old, to our retrospective Basquiat (2005) and critically acclaimed presentation Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks (2015).

At 22, he became one of the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his artwork in 1992. Basquiat's art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience.

Organized and curated by the family of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this exhibition of more than two hundred never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, and artifacts tells Basquiat’s story from an intimate perspective, intertwining his artistic endeavors with his personal life, influences, and the times in which he lived.

The most comprehensive re-evaluation of the prolific artist’s career since a 1992 retrospective at New York’s Whitney Museum, the exhibition will include more than seventy paintings and fifty works on paper presented on two floors.
