A watchtower or guardtower (also spelt watch tower, guard tower) is a type of military / paramilitary or policiary tower used for guarding an area. Sometimes fortified, and armed with heavy weaponry, especially historically, the structures are built in areas of established control.

The Baltic Sea watchtower (German: Ostsee-Grenzturm) in Kühlungsborn is an old East German border troops watchtower that was manned by the Coastal Brigade (Grenzbrigade Küste) or GBK. As a maritime observation town of type BT 11 it was one of a series of originally 27 towers of this type on the coast of East Germany , of which only two survive.

The watchtower at Potsdamer Platz was erected in 1971. The shooting range stretched from the Tiergarten to the Brandenburg Gate. The tower was manned at all times by two border patrol soldiers working eight-hour watches in cramped conditions. Today, the watchtower is the last remaining one of its kind.

The only authentic watchtower in the City of Berlin is located at Potsdamer Platz. There were more than 200 of this type along the Wall. The watchtower is most likely the oldest testimonial of the German separation. As a private initiative, we have taken it over from the City of Berlin, refurbished it and made it accessible to the public.
