The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. Article III of the U.S. Constitution created the Supreme Court and authorized Congress to pass laws establishing a system of lower courts.

Article III of the Constitution invests the judicial power of the United States in the federal court system. Article III, Section 1 specifically creates the U.S. Supreme Court and gives Congress the authority to create the lower federal courts.

We serve the public in the courts, federal public defender offices, probation and pretrial services offices, appellate staff attorney offices, and the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.

Federal courts of appeals review the procedures and the decisions in the district courts, also known as trial courts, to make sure that the proceedings were fair and that the law was applied correctly.

Additionally, access to court opinions from many appellate, district, and bankruptcy courts are available for no fee in a text searchable format through a partnership with the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO), consistent with the E-Government Act.

Our services include processing civil and criminal cases, maintaining records, assembling juries, disseminating information on the activities of the Court, and providing other administrative and management support to the Court and its affiliates.
