Located in the Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County, Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the amber waters of Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade tinted by the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.

Located on Blackwater Canyon’s south rim, the lodge at Blackwater Falls State Park offers 54 comfortable rooms with sweeping views of the densely forested gorge below. Built in the 1950s, this lodge predates its sister lodge at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, about 20 minutes away, and has a smaller, quieter atmosphere.

Set on the rim of the scenic Blackwater Canyon in the mountains of Tucker County, Blackwater Falls State Park has been a favorite destination for travelers since opening in 1937. It’s also one of West Virginia’s most visited parks.

Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River, whose amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge. The “black” water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.

Blackwater Falls State Park has 39 fully-furnished cabins set in a wooded area near the lodge. These cabins offer real peace and quiet. The park’s 13 Vacation Cabins sit on the north side of the park, down the road from the famous Blackwater Falls.

Experience the thrill of racing down more than a quarter mile of fresh mountain snow on the sled run at Blackwater Falls State Park. The longest sled run on the East Coast, the sled run at Blackwater Falls State Park is a must-do every year.

Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society is hosting the 36th annual Astronomy Weekend at Blackwater Falls State Park. This event includes nightly star parties (weather permitting) at the Harold Walters Nature Center, guest speakers and perhaps a workshop throughout the day in Blackwater Falls Lodge, Milton Harr Conference Center.
