Bass Reeves was born into slavery in Arkansas. He escaped to the lawless Indian Territory during the Civil War. Then he became one of the first Black U.S. Marshals under Judge Isaac Parker. Reeves patrolled the expansive wilderness and captured over 3,000 criminals throughout his career. He applied the law with strict rigidity and was respected and feared.
